Cannot connect using MMS protocol
If I click on a link that resolves to
any similar link)
Windows Medial player opens and displays the Connecting to Media
message in the status bar then displays the following error.
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified
protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog
box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or
I am running XP Pro SP2 on a small network connected to the internet
using cable modem through a Linksys BEFSR41 cable/dsl router. Everyone
else I know can access these files. What am I doing wrong? Help!<g>

- I should add that I have an old Win2k Server system running Media
Player 6 on the network and I have no problem playing these files from
that computer so the problem does not appear to be related to the
network or router. It has something to do with my system.
Also not that the XP firewall is off on the computer that has the

- Bill, I had the same problem with MMS not rolling over to HTTP. I found an
article that suggested registering a dll file. regsvr32
I tried it and it worked. All of the mms links I couldn't get to work now
work. Good luck.
